With over 400,000 installed systems world-wide, the Dell PowerVault family is a well-established product in the SME market. According to IDC, Dell’s market share is greater than the next 6 vendors combined. With this level of market acceptance, I reckon the latest iteration – the PowerVault ME4 – should be the mainstay of every reseller’s storage portfolio.
The ME4 line up is easy to articulate to your end-users. We have 3 models, named according to their drive capacities – the ME4012, ME4024 and ME4084.
|Model||Drive Bays||Rack Size|
|PowerVault ME4012||12 (2.5″)||2U|
|PowerVault ME4024||24 (3.5″)||2U|
|PowerVault 4084||84 (3.5″)||5U|
Each model can be configured with Fibre Channel, iSCSI or 12Gb SAS connections to the customers servers. Capacity upgrades are handled by adding ‘EBOD’ expansion enclosures – the ME412/ME424/ME484 each of which follows the same naming convention of the main SAN unit (12/24/84 drive bays). These are connected via 12Gb SAS cables, giving huge storage capacity from an entry-level solution.
Where do you sell the PowerVault ME4?
The PowerVault ME4 is used in many scenario’s, supporting a wide range of workloads. VMware customers will appreciate the vCenter integration, database users will love the all-flash performance and for the video security market Dell are delivering a cost-effective scaleable capacity solution.
The ME4 replaces all of the previous generation PowerVault MD3 SAN’s. It’s a simpe, low-cost direct replacement for customers that need to continue with simple to manage, low-cost per TB centralised storage. The good news here is that compared to the MD3, the ME4 delivers 122% more raw capacity, 4X overall performance and 2.6X faster writes. And taking many customers biggest headache away – the ME4 is fully HTML5 managed, no more Java modules to juggle with.
The ME4 follows Dell’s mantra of including all-inclusive software, there are no additional costs for additional functionality.
- Thin Provisioning – Allocate capacity as needed.
- SSD Read Cache – Increases application speed.
- Remote Replication – of thin provisioned pools to any global location
- Snapshots – File recovery after accidental deletion in seconds.
- Auto-Tiering – Efficient performance mixing SSD’s with low-cost HDD’s
- Volume Copy – Clone volumes on different drives to increase user performance.
- Encryption – Drives removed
- vCenter & SRM support
Dell have even included support for CloudIQ – the cloud native monitoring application beloved of EMC users that uses AI and predictive analytics to deliver proactive health monitoring.
Just because the ME4 is entry-level, Dell have not compromised on quality. The PowerVault ME4 delivers one of the lowest “Data Unavailable/Data Loss” rates in the market at 0.04%. That translates to greater than 99.999% availability.
Where To Sell Other Dell EMC SAN’s
Whilst the PowerVault ME4 is appropriate in a very wide range of use cases, for a variety of workloads, there are certain circumstances where the customer conversation has to start with alternative products.
The PowerVault ME4 is a point solution. It does what it does very well, but the capabilities will not be extended in any great way. Sell it for what it provides today. I may be using the wrong wording here (this is not Dell’s content), but the ME4 is not strategic. It’s a simple low-cost SME solution. If your customer needs to think ‘corporate’ with long-term growth plans in capacity, performance and workload, they are probably better staring their journey with the Dell SC range or EMC Unity (discussion of which is better covered in a seperate article). Manageability is where you can clearly position the ME4 against the mid-range storage offerings. The ME4 management console is a single SAN product. If your customers wants 10 SAN’s in their organisation, that’s 10 management consoles. The ME4 is designed for the (very large) market that just needs one or two SAN’s and does not need to think to much about what their storage strategy is.
